An avid Gor Mahia fan, Wicklife Obala, met a sorrowful demise on Friday, December 22, 2023, in a tragic road incident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road.
The incident occurred as the fans left Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, having just witnessed his team secure victory over Bandari in an FKF Premier League encounter.
The news of the fan's tragic death rang across various social media platforms shortly after the match, a sombre occurrence later confirmed by former Gor Mahia treasurer, Sally Bolo.
Bolo issued a solemn statement extending condolences for the loss, stressing the importance of safety, cautioning against the perilous act of clinging to moving vehicles.
"Our deepest condolences for the loss of Wicklife Obala, a Gor Mahia fan. Let's reflect on safety; clinging to moving vehicles jeopardizes lives. May his soul rest in eternal peace," Bolo said as reported by Pulse Sports.
The tragic event recalls a hauntingly related accident in April 2018 when four Gor Mahia fans lost their lives following road collision involving two vehicles. The fans were headed to Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Eyewitnesses recounted that some fans were precariously hanging on the bus when the driver lost control, resulting in a devastating collision with another vehicle. With the four dead, at least 10 others sustained wounds.
In another unfortunate incident in January 2018, Gor Mahia fans mourned the loss of one of their own, known by the Facebook alias 'Jakababa Jakafadhe' He succumbed to injuries after a harrowing four-month battle at a Nairobi hospital. His tragic fate unfolded when he slipped off a moving bus and fell beneath its wheels, reported Goal.
