FootballLiverpool vs Arsenal: Re-Living the Last Time Gunners Beat Reds at Anfield in 2012
- Liverpool hosts Arsenal on December 23 in a top-of-the-table clash
- The Reds could go top of the EPL with a win over the current leaders
- Arsenal have struggled for victories at Anfield for more than a decade
The biggest game of the weekend in the Premier League is undoubtedly Arsenal’s trip to Anfield to face their title rivals, Liverpool.
After 17 games, the two teams have shown fans enough to believe they are genuine contenders amid defending champions, Manchester City’s dip in form.
Going into the game, Arsenal hold a one-point advantage over the Reds, who were frustrated by Manchester United in a 0-0 stalemate the last time out.
The game was gruelling for coach, Jurgen Klopp, who saw his side falter at Anfield for the first time this season.
Saturday’s blockbuster clash will be like a game of chess, as Liverpool and Arsenal hold varying advantages if historical stats are anything to go by.
According to Sportsmole, the Reds’ biggest weapon is the Anfield factor, as they have lost just once in their last 50 top flight home matches. This includes an unbeaten run in their previous 20 games at their stadium.
For Arsenal, they have turned into a winning machine under Mikel Arteta this year, winning 24 of their 39 Premier League matches in 2023 (eight draws, seven losses).
The Gunners’ defence is also not bad at all, as they have conceded the fewest shots on target in the Premier League this term with 43.
When Arsenal beat Liverpool at Anfield
However, history seems to favour Liverpool, who have proven to be unbeatable at Anfield against Arsenal. In the last 10 home league games against the Gunners, the Reds are unbeaten, winning seven and drawing three.
To find Arsenal’s last win over Liverpool at Anfield, you will have to go all the way back to 2012 when Arsene Wenger was still in the dugout.

FootballThe Gunners completely dominated Liverpool, managed by Brendan Rodgers, securing a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from summer signings, Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla, according to the BBC.
That loss by the Reds, which happened on September 2, 2012, confirmed the club’s worst start to a league campaign since 1962/63, as cited on the Arsenal website.
The Gunners ended up finishing fourth that season, below Manchester City (second), Chelsea (third), and eventual champions Manchester United. Liverpool ended the season in seventh place.
Players who could replace Salah
Sports Brief also previously reported on the players who could replace Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian superstar departs Merseyside.
The Egyptian has been one of the major driving forces in Klopp’s success since he joined the club permanently from AS Roma in 2017.
However, Salah's future at Anfield has been up in the air in recent months amid links to the Saudi Pro League, which made him an offer.
