The head coach of SuperSport United, Gavin Hunt, has expressed disappointment following the brawl involving his side and Al-Hilal Benghazi at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Both sides were involved in a mass bust-up during the highly intense CAF Confederations Cup encounter on Wednesday night.
It was Matsatsantsa who won the encounter 2-1, but the result was overshadowed by the scenes in the final 10 minutes of the game involving multiple players.
SuperSport returned to winning ways, having lost their previous three games, to give themselves a lifeline of reaching the quarter-finals of the continental competition.
Bournemouth’s last 5 results suggest manager Andoni Iraola might have saved his job
FootballTimes Live reports that with just two matches to go in the preliminary rounds, USM Alger lead the group with 10 points, Egypt's Modern Future have seven, while Al-Hilal and SuperSport United have three each.
Viral footage on social media shows how the game reached boiling point, with fists flying here and there. Hunt claimed that the brawl arose when the visitors tried to get one of his players sent off.
Hunt commented on how he should have been pleased at winning the game but was instead disappointed by the shameful scenes on the pitch.
"Did you see what happened? I can’t put my finger on [what caused] it because there was so much commotion. We were lucky it didn’t end worse than it was. It could have ended worse, but it didn’t, so we are lucky.
"But it came from somebody trying to get somebody sent off, and it was not right. Right in front of us, so a lot of people reacted... I’m at a point where I want to retire and get out of the game because you can’t play football like this," Hunt admitted.
