Pochettino began his football career as a central defender at Newell's Old Boys in 1987. He moved to RCD Espanyol in Spain at 22, where he spent six and a half years with the club. Mauricio won the 2000 Copa del Rey with the Catalan club.

He signed for Paris Saint-German Football Club in 2001, spending two seasons before joining Bordeaux in 2003 and returning to Espanyol in 2004. He retired in 2006, aged 34.
