- The match ended in a 1-1 draw before the Blues won via post-match penalties to advance to the semis
Details have emerged on why Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez was withdrawn in the 32nd minute of their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United.
The two Premier League giants faced off in an entertaining clash on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues advancing to the semis on post-match penalties.
According to the Evening Standard, the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw after regulation time, with Chelsea seeing off the Magpies 4-2 on penalties to qualify.
Callum Wilson gave Newcastle an early lead before the Blues' Mykhailo Mudryk equalised at stoppage time to force the game to a shootout.
However, Chelsea’s victory was clouded by a worrying incident that saw Fernandez subbed off in the first half.
Why Enzo Fernandez was subbed off
Metro UK reports that the Argentine midfielder was withdrawn after 32 minutes because he felt sick. His place was subsequently taken by Armando Broja, who saw off the remainder of the tie.
The midfielder was seen very teary as he reappeared shortly after the full-time whistle as his teammates applauded the crowd.
Speaking on Fernandez’s substitution, coach Mauricio Pochettino said:
"He didn’t feel well before the game and then when he started to play, it wasn’t going well. He asked to come out because he wasn’t feeling well.
"He was a little bit sick before the game. He tried, he wanted to play, see if it goes well but it goes not so well and that is why [he looked upset]," he added.
