Rulani Mokwena has compared his team Mamelodi Sundowns to two English Premier League giants after their victory over Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League.
The Premier Soccer League champions secured an important three points with a 1-0 win over the Egyptian side at the 30 June Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Teboho Mokoena's lone striker in the 17th minute gave the South African the deserved win in Egypt as they went top of Group A with seven points.
Mokwena during an interview after the game compared his team to EPL sides Arsenal and Manchester City after the interviewer asked if they were giving up on their beautiful style of play due to their performance, according to a report by iDiskiTimes.
“We are football romantics, we love football but we also understand that in the game of football, you have to answer what the game asks of you,” he said.
"If you look at the modern game, the best teams in the world; what makes Manchester City a difficult team to beat, is because they work very hard when they do not have the ball.
"What makes Arsenal at the moment probably the best team in the English Premier League is that they work very hard when they do not have the ball."
Mamelodi Sundowns' next game in the competition would be against FC Nouadhibou in Mauritania next year February.
Sundowns close to signing Esquivel from Argentina
Sports Brief also previously reported that Sundowns are set to sign Matias Esquivel from Argentine side Lanus.
The South American star is said to have agreed on personal terms with the Brazilians for a four-year contract.
The 24-year-old has been on loan at Talleres since 2022 and has been one of the club's most important players, with his performance impressing Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena.
