Coaches and players sometimes have an undeniable chemistry.
Percy Tau's big break into the footballing world was facilitated by Pitso Mosimane and the coach again offered him an opportunity when his career looked to be stagnating.
Now that Tau has established himself as one of the premier footballers on the continent, his former mentor is taking a humble stance on the origins of his success.
The South African match-winner had an outstanding 2023, winning the CAF Champions League with Al Ahly. His form earned him the 2023 Interclub Player of the Year award at the recent CAF Awards.
Going toe-to-toe with a star-studded Al-Ittihad lineup in the Club World Cup, Tau was instrumental for 86 minutes as the Egyptians beat their Saudi Arabian opponents 3-1.
Mosimane has put the player's deserved prominence down to the man's character instead of his own contributions. SoccerLaduma relayed his comments made on television, quoting:
"I never took Percy Tau anywhere, Percy Tau took himself. That is a top player. That is a man who knows how to train, how to win. This is a made who is a total holistic player."
After losing 2-0 to Fluminense in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup, Al Ahly will play with either Manchester City or Urawa Reds in the third-place playoff.
Following that commitment on Friday, December 22, Tau will have roughly two weeks before being expected to link up with his South African teammates to prepare for AFCON.

Broos names preliminary AFCON squad
Sports Brief previously reported on Hugo Broos announcing his initial squad to prepare for AFCON 2023.
The 50-man squad will be trimmed down to 27 players, with the list needing to be submitted by January 4.
Broos was criticised for his selection, however, with some questioning the omission of Relebohile Mofokeng.
