FootballAFCON 2023: Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Sends Strong Message to Jose Peseiro Over Uzoho, Others
- Jose Peseiro will lead the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
- Nigerians are concerned about the goalkeeping situation and Alloy Agu is particularly worried
- The former Super Eagles shot-stopper has urged coach Peseiro to give other goalkeepers a try
Former Nigerian national team goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, has urged coach Jose Peseiro to fix the goalkeeping problems plaguing the Super Eagles.
The Nigerian goalkeeping department has become a significant source of worry for fans ahead of the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
With less than one month until the continental showpiece kicks off in January, Peseiro's side has not been convincing, as seen in recent matches.
The Super Eagles failed to win either of their first two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, having to settle for 1-1 draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
Nigeria's number one goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho also failed to inspire confidence between the sticks in recent outings for the three-time African champions.
Alloy Agu, who earned 28 caps for the West Africans between 1988 and 1995, has urged Peseiro to try out other goalkeepers. He told Complete Sports:
"It’s so sad that the goalkeeping department is still a big issue the team is battling with at the moment. The truth is, you can’t win a tournament if you don’t have a quality goalkeeper that you can bank on."
Alloy mentioned a few instances where errors by Uzoho cost Nigeria the maximum points and believes there are other goalkeepers waiting in the proverbial wings.
"There is a need to fix the goalkeeping problem if the Super Eagles must progress far at the 2023 AFCON. He has to give other goalkeepers the opportunity to prove their worth so that we can have a reliable goalkeeper."

FootballPeseiro submits 40-man provisional list
Sports Brief previously reported that Peseiro submitted a 40-man provisional squad to CAF ahead of next year's AFCON, with Gent forward, Gift Orban one of the biggest omissions.
The 21-year-old forward joins veteran defender, Leon Balogun and Super Eagles' first-choice goalkeeper at the last AFCON, Maduka Okoye as falling out of Nigeria's provisional squad.
Kelechi Nwakali and Sporting Lagos goalkeeper, Christian Nwoke are surprise inclusions as the former Golden Eaglets captain makes a return for the first time since the previous AFCON.
