Kenyan striker, Wilson Waweru has finalised a transfer to Sligo Rovers, a prominent Irish top-division club, ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Waweru's journey to Sligo Rovers follows a successful loan stint with first-division side, Cobh Ramblers, where he scored 13 goals.

Coach Russell expressed his excitement about Waweru's arrival, terming him an exceptional player who he was thrilled to be welcoming:

"Coming through the Galway United academy, he made a mark when breaking into their first team. I've been closely monitoring his progress, and his goal-scoring achievements at Cobh last year were impressive," Wilson said per the club’s website.

The 22-year-old forward began his football journey with Galway United, making his debut in 2018 under the guidance of Alan Murphy.

He scored 16 goals in four seasons before his standout performance at Cobh Ramblers, contributing to their third-place finish in the First Division.

Describing Waweru's playing style, Russell remarked:

"He is a natural finisher, quick, strong, and capable of making runs behind the defence. He joins us at a good age, and I'm genuinely excited to have him with us next year."

Waweru happy with Sligo Rovers transfer

Waweru expressed his happiness about joining the club, identifying himself as an out-and-out number 9 and a focal point in the attacking lineup.

Reflecting on his time at Cobh last year, he highlighted the quality of his goals and assists, anticipating the higher level of competition in the Premier Division.

"I feel I am becoming a better player every year, and with the quality of players that will be at the club, I feel I can bring that form with me next year," Waweru said, as reported by The Irish Mirror.

Notably, his move to Sligo Rovers draws parallels with English-born Kenyan striker, Jonah Ayunga, who previously played on loan at the club. Ayunga currently features for Scottish Premiership side, St Mirren.

As Russell continues to shape his squad for the upcoming league season, the club anticipates the impact a player of Waweru's quality will have.

Ranking Ireland’s best teams

In July, Sports Brief also ranked Ireland's top 10 best men’s football teams, with the sport being popular for its fierce competition, unique atmosphere, passionate fans, and top athletes.

Shamrock Rovers was ranked first among the country's clubs, being the most prosperous in the Republic of Ireland, boasting a record 20 championships and 25 F.A.I Cups in its history.
