Premier League Soccer champions Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly closing in on Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel.

The Argentine star is currently owned by Lanus, a club in his country's top-flight league, and has been linked with top clubs in Europe and South America.

The 24-year-old has been on loan at Talleres since 2022 and has been one of the club's most important players, with his performance impressing Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena.

According to reports by iDiskiTimes, the Argentine midfielder has agreed personal terms with Sundowns and would sign a four-year lucrative deal.

Reports in Argentina also confirmed that the Lanus midfielder's move to the Premier Soccer League champions is complete but media outlets in South Africa claimed the African Football League champions are still negotiating the transfer fee for the player.

Esquivel still has two more years in his current deal with parent club Lanus, and the Argentine club side are holding out on a huge transfer fee for their player.

The Argentine midfielder is seen as a perfect replacement for Erwin Saavedra whose future at Sundowns is under serious doubt.

Esquivel is a utility player who can play as a midfielder and also as a winger or inside forward, and would be the latest South America at the Lucas Moripe Stadium if he eventually joins the Brazilians.

He has played 95 games and has scored seven goals and assisted 12.

Mosimane on signing Luis Diaz for Sundowns

Sports Brief previously reported that Pitso Mosimane was close to signing Luis Diaz for Mamelodi Sundowns before he decided to join FC Porto.

During Mosimane's time as Sundowns coach, the former Al Ahly manager won titles with foreign stars like Ali Meza, Mauricio Affonso, Ricardo Nascimento, and Gaston Sirino.

The 59-year-old tactician also narrated how he would travel to South America to look out for top talents and bring them to Africa.
