According to The Mirror, Dalot was handed his marching orders in the final moments of the EPL encounter staged at Anfield.

The Portuguese star was shown two yellow cards within two seconds by referee, Michael Oliver, leaving United with a man less for the remainder of the tie.

Both yellow cards were flashed for dissent, with Dalot initially booked for protesting a decision by the referee after awarding a throw-in in an attacking area.

The 24-year-old reacted by throwing his hands in the air in outrage.

The ref went on to show him a second yellow card for protesting continually before he was subsequently shown a red card.

Sports Brief takes a look at four other incidents where players were sent off under some of the most bizarre circumstances.

Most bizarre red cards in football history

4. Swedish player sent off for letting rip

In June 2016, Adam Lindin Ljungkvist, a Swedish footballer, was sent off for letting rip.

It is unknown if Lindin had an upset stomach prior to the Swedish seventh-tier match pitting Jarna SK's B-team against Pershagen SK.

However, the referee still went on to send off the player, much to the surprise of many.

3. Kevin Horlock carded for 'aggressive walking'

In 1999, Kevin Horlock was controversially sent off for allegedly walking aggressively.

Reflecting on the incident, he disclosed that the ref presumed his walking style was aggressive, unknown to him that one of his legs is shorter than the other.

The former footballer was approaching the centre referee to complain about a previous foul.

2. David Healy sent off for celebrating

Back in 2004, David Healy was involved in one of the most ridiculous red cards in the history of football.

According to Sportbible, the North Ireland striker was sent off for his celebration after scoring his side's second goal.

Healy celebrated by kicking the corner flag and was punished by sitting out the rest of the game.

1. Player sent off for tackling streaker

A non-league player was once set off for helping stewards tackle a streaker.

With the stewards having no chance of chasing a Borat wannabe, Ashley Vickers offered to step in and intervene.

Vickers went on to pin down the streaker to the ground, only for the referee to red-card him for violent conduct.

Arteta gets yellow card

Sports Brief previously reported on opinion being divided after Mikel Arteta was shown a yellow card during Arsenal's Premier League clash against Brighton on Sunday.

The Spanish manager was booked in the closing stages of the first half of the tie with the scores still goalless, with his team then grinding out a victory over the Seagulls.
