  • Terem Moffi could miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury
  • The Super Eagles striker missed OGC Nice's last game in the league
  • Moffi has scored four goals and assisted two in Ligue 1 this season

Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has suffered a hamstring injury ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.

Nigeria could be without another striker after losing Taiwo Awoniyi already, which leaves them with Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface.

The former Lorient striker has been one of the best players for OGC Nice in the French Ligue 1 this season.

Moffi has started 15 games this season and has scored four goals and assisted two more.

The Nigerian international was not part of the Nice team that lost 3-1 to Le Havre this weekend after the French side confirmed that their star striker had sustained a hamstring injury before the game, according to a report by Soccernet.

Moffi's injury at this moment will come as bad news for Jose Peseiro, with the Portuguese manager losing one of his strikers to injury earlier.

There is a possibility the former Lorient star might not recover from injury before Super Eagles final squad for AFCON is released.

Peseiro need not worry too much about the possibility of not having Moffi at his disposal for the biggest football competition in Africa next year, as the country has other options like Umar Sadiq, Paul Onuachu, Cyriel Dessers, Josh Maja and others.

Osimhen backs Nigeria for AFCON

Sports Brief previously reported Victor Osimhen has declared that Nigeria is ready for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and is optimistic the Super Eagles will be one of the major contenders for the title in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles last won the tournament in 2013 when Steven Keshi led the team to its third continental title, but they have failed to make the final since then, exiting in the Round of 16 in the 2022 edition.

Osimhen, recently crowned as the 2023 Africa Player of the Year, is confident the Super Eagles are raring to go and have the capacity to defeat other top teams to the AFCON title.
