FootballLiverpool vs Manchester United: 7–0 Memories, Salah’s Skill As Klopp Meets ten Hag Again at Anfield
- Manchester United will return to the scene of the worst-ever Premier League defeat
- Erik ten Hag watched as his side conceded seven unanswered goals vs Liverpool last season
- We relive that game at Anfield that had Salah leaving Lisandro Martinez for dead
They meet again. Manchester United fans most probably still have nightmares from their last visit to Anfield on March 5, 2023.
It was a game that Erik ten Hag had downplayed, calling Anfield 'just another field' he has played at in his career. A classic second-half Liverpool performance then made the Dutchman eat his words.
The Red Devils shipped in six goals, plus Cody Gakpo's effort just before the break, to record their worst-ever Premier League defeat.
A 7-0 scoreline sounded like a joke. Given how Manchester United were on the ascendancy then, with Jurgen Klopp barely managing to mount a challenge for Champions League qualification, no one expected such a scoreline.
United had looked resolute and determined to get a result in Merseyside for the first time since 2016. However, a stepover from Gakpo to get away from Raphael Varane before bending the ball past David de Gea set things in motion.
As ten Hag gave his half-time speech, belief was rife that overturning a 1-0 deficit was possible. In the other dressing room, Klopp was telling his boys to zero in for the kill.
And boy, didn't they just do that.
Five minutes after the restart, Liverpool were three goals clear courtesy of a close-range header from Darwin Nunez and a beautiful Gakpo lob over de Gea. Things were getting out of hand.
Salah embarrassing Lisandro Martinez
As if the scoreline wasn't embarrassing enough already, Mohamed Salah, him of the Egyptian king fame and a lethal left foot, had managed to rinse one of Manchester United's better performances, Lisandro Martinez, with a silky dummy.
Barca loan star Felix makes Atletico pay in title race
FootballThe 'Butcher', as he is fondly known, had settled in quite well for ten Hag, displacing Harry Maguire from the starting XI. Despite questions about his small body, he never put a foot wrong and turned out to be a real asset.
But against Salah, he found his match with the moment, making it to our funniest moments of the 2022/2023 season. Salah sent him back to his birth town of Gualeguay in North Argentina.
Salah then got on the scoresheet himself, unleashing a shot on the edge of the area before Nunez got his second of the night in the 75th minute.
5-0. Pretty decent scoreline, no? You'd think Liverpool were done.
Or maybe they were, but Salah was presented with a tap-in opportunity, and he wouldn't miss that and pass on an opportunity to take his shirt off. Roberto Firmino then came off the bench to score one of his last goals for Liverpool.

Rivalries renewed
Ten Hag will have a chance to set the record straight on December 17, but from the foregoing, they are disadvantaged already. Liverpool head into this game as league leaders, while United are sixth and have struggled all season to churn out consistent results.
Additionally, they will be without at least ten first-team players, including captain Bruno Fernandes. Yes, miracles happen in football, but one feels that should Liverpool feel like it again, that 7-0 scoreline might be dwarfed.
A Manchester United fan on X(formerly Twitter) couldn't have summarised it any better;
"You can not break a man that's already broken. Do your worst."
