FootballTom Lockyer: Tributes Pour In As Football World Rally Behind Luton Captain Who Collapsed in EPL Game
- Luton captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday
- Lockyer is 'responsive' and 'stable' following his hospitalisation
- This is the second time the 29-year-old has experienced a similar situation this year
The football community united in sending heartfelt tributes to Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer after he collapsed during his team's Premier League match against Bournemouth.
Luton confirmed that Lockyer experienced a cardiac arrest, requiring him to be stretchered off during Saturday's game at the Vitality Stadium.
The club has reported that Lockyer is 'responsive' and 'stable' following his hospitalisation.
"Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher," said Luton, as cited by Sky Sports.
"Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside."
What happened?
In the 58th minute of the match, Lockyer collapsed, leading to the game's eventual abandonment.
Luton manager Rob Edwards swiftly intervened, guiding his players away from Lockyer to enable medical professionals and paramedics to provide immediate care.
The match was halted as players and officials relocated to the sidelines before eventually returning to the changing rooms a few minutes later.
The 29-year-old was then carried off on a stretcher, accompanied by medical personnel. Referee Simon Hooper called off the game after a delay of approximately 25 minutes, per Livescore.
Lockyer's health battles
Saturday's incident echoes painful memories from the Championship final in May, when the Welsh international collapsed on the pitch in the 11th minute and had to be stretchered off.
He experienced atrial fibrillation but underwent successful surgery and recovered in the hospital. Following Luton's promotion to the Premier League, Lockyer received medical clearance to resume playing.
