Football3 Players Who Could Captain Man Utd Against Liverpool in Fernandes’ Absence
- Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended for Liverpool clash
- The Portuguese received his fifth yellow card of the season against Bournemouth
- Erik ten Hag remains tight-lipped over his choice of captain for the crucial match
Manchester United will be without their captain, Bruno Fernandes, for the important match against Liverpool, as he is suspended because of yellow card accumulation.
Head coach Erik ten Hag refused to comment on his choice of captain for the Liverpool game when asked during his pre-game press conference, with Harry Maguire also out of the tie due to injury.
Sports Brief looks at the three players who are likely to be handed the armband at Anfield.
Manchester United’s potential captains
1. Marcus Rashford
Per Evening Standard, the academy star was declared fit for the match, having missed training during the week due to illness and could be slotted straight back into the starting 11 for the crucial Northwest derby.
He is the likeliest choice of captaincy in place of Fernandes. He has been at the club all his life and previously wore the armband.
2. Luke Shaw
Another injury doubt for the game who was passed fit by Erik ten Hag during his press conference. He limped off at half-time of the 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, which eliminated the team from the Champions League.
His versatility makes him a contender for the starting 11, most likely at centre-back with Maguire’s injury. He has been at the club since 2013 and could be handed the armband.
3. Scott McTominay
Only a few Manchester United fans want to see this, but the Scotland international is a candidate to captain the club against Liverpool. He is the club’s top scorer in the league this season, with five goals in 13 games. Surprisingly, he is yet to be booked despite his tough tackling attributes.
