  • The Cape Town City star has scored seven goals in 14 appearances this season
  • He shared the award with Mamelodi Sundowns star Peter Shalulile last season

Cape Town City striker Khanyisa Mayo has no interest in sharing the PSL Golden Boot this season.

Mayo, a target for giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, started the season slowly, but he is getting to the top form many fans expect.

The 25-year-old shared the PSL Golden Boot with Sundowns' Peter Shalulile last season after both scored 12 goals.

This season, he failed to score in Cape Town City's first five league games of the season but has since picked up some form with seven goals in the last nine games.

This season, he is facing competition from another Sundowns player, this time Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who has bagged seven goals in eight games. The Brazilian has the same number of goals but in fewer games.

SuperSport United's Bradley Grobler and Moroka Swallows' Tshegofatso Mabasa each has six goals. Shalulile has scored four goals this term, per Transfermarkt.

Mayo on this season's Golden Boot

Speaking to KickOff, Mayo is looking forward to lifting the Golden Boot alone this time around.

"Like last season I'm currently one of the joint top goalscorers, which means I'm still in the race to compete and win the Golden Boot again, and this time I'm not sharing," he said.

He added that despite a difficult start in front of goal, he was patient, knowing that finding that one goal would open the floodgates.

"I want to be a solo winner and I want to be recognised amongst the best in the country..."

Mayo's side are also third in the table with 25 points from 14 games. Can they challenge Sundiowns for the title this season?

Mayo sent off for diving

Sports Brief earlier reported on Mayo receiving his matching orders against an in form Stellenbosch FC.

Mayo received a second yellow after the referee believed he had simulated a foul. He is serving a two-match ban following his sending-off.

He received the second yellow card deep into injury time when he theatrically threw himself on the floor.
