  • The two biggest clubs in English football share the fiercest rivalry
  • Not many players have represented both clubs due to the rivalry

Manchester United and Liverpool are the Premier League’s two most successful teams and biggest rivals. The two are set to face off for their first meeting of the season at Anfield on Sunday.

The rivalry between the two sides is so fierce that the last time they transferred a player directly between themselves was Phil Chisnall, who moved from Old Trafford to Anfield in 1964.

Sports Brief looks at the top 5 players to play for both clubs.

5 players who played for Liverpool and Manchester United

1. Michael Owen

The Chester-born forward is the last player to turn up for both clubs. He progressed through Liverpool’s academy and spent eight years in the first team before moving to Real Madrid in 2004, where he spent just a season before returning to England with Newcastle United.

He moved to United on a free transfer in 2009 but was majorly a squad player throughout his time. Per Metro UK, after winning the Premier in 2011, he made the famous statement, “If you can’t beat them, join them”, a comment which annoyed his boyhood club fans.

2. Paul Ince

Ince played in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team between 1989 to 1995. He joined Inter Milan, but his time in Italy did not go well, and he returned to England with Liverpool in 1997, coinciding with the club’s decline.

He spent the rest of his career playing for Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swindon and Macclesfield but never hit the heights he had at United. Per Sportskeeda, he is the only player to captain both clubs.

3. Tom Chorlton

The defender was the first player to move directly from both clubs when he left Anfield and joined United in 1912. His time with the Red Devils could have been better, and he played only four league games.

4. Phil Chisnall

The last player to directly transfer from both clubs. Chisnall joined Liverpool from Manchester United in 1964. In 2013, he admitted surprise that he was the record holder of the last transfer between the two clubs.

5. Peter Beardsley

He almost escaped being on the list. Beardsley had just one appearance for the Red Devils. He played for Vancouver Whitecaps and Newcastle before joining Liverpool, where he spent four years. From there, he joined Merseyside rivals Everton. He has a knack for moving to rivals.
