  • It was the last time the traditional group phase of the competition will be held
  • Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is the best dribbler from the group stages

The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League has reached the knockout stage after completing the final group games - the last time the traditional group stage format will be played.

As of next season, a Swiss-style group stage of 36 teams will be adopted, each playing eight games against different opponents. The top eight teams qualify for the round of 16, while teams nine to 24 face a playoff.

The traditional group phase in its final outing was not short of entertainment. Sports Brief looks at the best five dribblers of the 2023 tournament's opening phase.

UCL group top dribblers

1. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Per Squawka, Kvaradona, as he is fondly referred to, was the most entertaining player in the first six games, completing 24 of his take-ons as Napoli qualified, finishing second in the group that has 14-time winners, Real Madrid.

2. Kylian Mbappe

The French star can do everything, can’t he? The Paris Saint-Germain star completed 22 take-ons despite his team’s struggles, but they luckily made it out of the group on the final day despite their 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

3. Jeremy Doku

The exciting Belgian winger is one of football’s best showmen this season. He completed 21 dribbles as defending Manchester City won all six games in their group. Per mancity.com, he has completed a league-high 11 dribbles against Liverpool in the Premier League.

4. Chidera Ejuke, Rafael Leao

Ejuke and Leao are tied on 18 dribbles completed. Unfortunately, neither player can add to their tally this season. AC Milan have dropped into the Europa League, while Royal Antwerp were eliminated entirely from Europe.

5. Leroy Sane

One of Bayern Munich’s most lethal players this season, Sane completed 17 dribbles. He helped the German champions qualify from the group alongside FC Copenhagen, while Galatasaray and Manchester United were eliminated.

Top 5 goal line blocks

Sports Brief also previously analysed the top five goal-line blocks after Niklas Sule’s brilliant clearance from Mbappe’s shot.

Mbappe spun the German defender after receiving a ball over the top, beating the goalkeeper and shooting into the net.

However, Sule had recovered to make a vital block for the Bundesliga giants, leaving the PSG star in disbelief at the skill.
