Argentina midfielder, Giovani Lo Celso has recounted a touching tale of how Lionel Messi's goal against Mexico in the 2022 FIFA World Cup unexpectedly influenced his own life.

Lo Celso, who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the English top flight, sustained a muscle tear that ruled him out of the global showpiece in Qatar last year.

The 27-year-old was expected to return from his injury layoff before the World Cup but later had to undergo surgery, extending his recovery time and invariably missing the Mundial.

Even though Lo Celso was sidelined from the World Cup due to injury, he shared how Messi's goal triggered a remarkable series of events for both him and his wife, Magui Alcacer.

As they watched the game together, the thrill of the captain's goal was so intense that it prompted Magui's water to break, ultimately leading to the birth of their child.

Discussing his feelings at that moment, Lo Celso told TyC Sport via Sportskeeda:

"We were watching the match against Mexico. Leo scores and we started screaming and what do I know, and when we turned around, she had broken the bag here. I think because of the scream, the euphoria, and everything that that moment must have meant. I think that Argentina at that moment moved heaven and earth."

How Argentina beat Mexico

Following Argentina's surprising defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup, it became imperative for them to secure a victory in the subsequent group-stage encounter against Mexico in order to maintain their aspirations of success.

La Albiceleste faced challenges in gaining control of the match until the 65th minute when Messi, as reported by GOAL, executed a flawless shot from 25 yards, breaking the deadlock by finding the bottom corner.

The Argentine maestro continued to make a significant impact by assisting Enzo Fernandez for the second goal, ultimately securing three crucial points for Lionel Scaloni's team against the North Americans.

Messi’s World Cup shirts sold at auction

Meanwhile, Forbes reports that six of the jerseys worn by Messi in Qatar have been sold off at an auction for a massive $7.803 million by New York-based auction house, Sotheby’s.

The only item missing was his match jersey from the 2-0 win over Poland in the group stage, which confirmed their progress to the knockout stage - likely swapped with an opponent.

The memorabilia became the most expensive Messi item ever sold and the third most valuable sports jersey behind Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1mil.
