  • Manchester United will have a less compact first month of the new year
  • A clash against Tottenham Hotspur is the only Premier League game they will play
  • United remain in only two competitions following their Champions League elimination

Manchester United fans will have to watch their side play only twice in January.

The festive period and the time after that is often characterised by a packed schedule, but Erik ten Hag's charges are set to enjoy a relaxed time.

The Red Devils are still reeling from the disappointment of getting eliminated from the Champions League this season. Their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich and Copenhagen's win against Galatasaray saw them get knocked out of Europe altogether.

Ten Hag's side have four more games in 2023, which starts with a visit to Anfield this Sunday to face Liverpool. Afterwards, they'll head to London to play West Ham before welcoming a high-flying Aston Villa side on Boxing Day, as captured by Talk Sport fixtures.

They will conclude their 2023 calendar year with another away trip to a beleaguered Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United's fixtures in January

Their first game in the new year will be an FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic on January 8 before hosting Tottenham Hotspur on January 14 in a Premier League clash.

Afterwards, their next game will come on February 1 when they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers. This game was initially planned for January 30.

Addressing the developments on their website, the club explained that the matches scheduled for live broadcast in the UK had necessitated the changes.

"The reason is that our Premier League away clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers has been moved from Tuesday 30 January to Thursday 1 February."

The West Ham game initially scheduled for February 3 will also be moved to another date to be communicated later.

United can, however, add a third game to their schedule should they beat Wigan and qualify for the fourth round of the FA Cup scheduled for the week of January 27-28.

How Man United's fixtures compare to their rivals

Manchester United's rivals will play at least three matches in January. Manchester City, for instance, have a date against Huddersfield in the FA Cup before playing Newcastle United and Burnley.

Liverpool will play Newcastle, Arsenal(FA Cup), Bournemouth and Chelsea, with the possibility of the fixture list rising should they beat West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals next week and Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Arsenal play Liverpool(FA Cup), Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forrest.

Ten Hag's possible replacements

Earlier, Sports Brief analysed six available world-class managers who could replace under-fire Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag has come under immense criticism in recent weeks owing to Manchester United's struggles this season across competitions.

United have endured a worrying run of inconsistencies, with the club currently unable to maintain any momentum.
