FootballMoises Caicedo: £115M Star Explains Why He Chose Chelsea Over Liverpool
- Chelsea and Liverpool went to war over the transfer of Moises Caicedo
- Chelsea won the £115 million race, breaking the British transfer record fee
- The Blues also beat the Reds to the signing of Southampton’s Romeo Lavia
Chelsea won an intense transfer battle against Liverpool in the summer over the signing of Moises Caicedo, and the player has now explained why he opted to go to Stamford Bridge.
Caicedo was close to leaving Brighton for Arsenal in January, but the club stood in his way. Shortly after the window closed, he signed a new contract that would allow him to leave in the summer.
Chelsea spent most of the summer negotiating with Brighton over a low fee despite knowing what the Seagulls wanted through sporting director Paul Winstanley, formerly at the club.
Per The Athletic, Liverpool jumped ahead of the Londoners and agreed a fee of £111 million with Brighton, but the player agreement was missing, allowing Todd Boehly’s side more time to negotiate.
Why Caicedo snubbed Liverpool for Chelsea
The 2021 UEFA Champions League winner eventually closed an agreement for £115mil, breaking the British transfer record fee previously held by Enzo Fernandez, who moved to Stamford Bridge in January.
In an interview with Sky Sports, the Ecuadorian has now disclosed why he turned down a move to Anfield and waited for Chelsea to sort things out.
“I was talking with Chelsea for a long time. It was impossible to say not to Chelsea, because they were with me supporting me,” he explained.
“In the summer I suffered a lot because it was complicated to leave Brighton. They were with me, and I'm the last moment Liverpool called me but it was [too] late because I wanted to play for Chelsea. It was tough to say no to Chelsea.”

FootballChelsea also beat Liverpool to the signing of Romeo Lavia, whom Jurgen Klopp’s team had courted for most of the summer. Per SportBible, the German boss aimed a dig at both players recently, with Caicedo struggling and Lavia yet to play.

Rival fans troll Caicedo
Sports Brief previously reported that rival fans trolled Caicedo after the British record transfer signing conceded a late penalty while his team was chasing an equaliser.
His cameo in the game was not impressive, albeit he is still settling into his new environment. However, that is a meal for rival fans who showed no mercy to the 21-year-old Ecuadorian midfielder.
