  • Manchester United and Newcastle have been eliminated from European football
  • Both teams finished bottom of their groups and won’t drop into the Europa League
  • Their disappointing outing will affect the Premier League’s slots for next season

After their UEFA Champions League group stage eliminations, Manchester United and Newcastle have put the Premier League in a difficult spot next season.

United finished last in the group with Bayern Munich, Galatasaray, and Copenhagen, winning just once and conceding an English record of 15 goals in the first round.

Newcastle also came last in the so-called group of death, which included Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan. They could take consolation in their 4-1 demolition of PSG at St. James Park.

Per TNT Sports, the two set an unwanted record for English football, as it was the first time two clubs from the country finished bottom of the Champions League groups.

PL risks missing 5th UCL spot next season

Per EuroFoot, this year is the last time the UCL will have a traditional group stage. From next season, it will be a Swiss style, where 36 teams will compete in one big table and play eight games against different opponents.

UEFA will award a fifth spot to two of the top 5 European leagues, and the league coefficient rankings, which previously had Spain and England in number 1, will be used.

According to Metro UK, after United and Newcastle’s elimination, England dropped to number 3 on the league’s ranking and, as such, could miss out on the fifth spot.

This will come as bad news for teams, notably Chelsea, who are struggling this season, but a late rally and 5th-place finish could have helped them into the competition next season.
