Liverpool set to clinch place in Europa League knockouts
FootballUCL: Manchester United Set 2 Unwanted Records for Premier League Sides After Elimination
- Manchester United have been eliminated from European football this season
- The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich and finished bottom of their group
- Their European journey this year set two bad records for the Premier League
Manchester United’s European adventure for the 2023/24 season ended last night after their 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and FC Copenhagen’s win over Galatasaray.
The Red Devils have been abysmal in this year’s competition, finishing at the bottom of a group and picking up four points, despite being expected to outclass at least two teams.
United went into last night’s game knowing only a win would give them any hope of securing passage into the UEFA Europa League playoffs but recorded only one shot on target.
To compound the misery on Erik ten Hag’s team, they lost English defenders, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw to injuries in the first half ahead of a crunch meeting with Liverpool on Sunday.
Man Utd set two UCL records
It was all shades of wrong for United in the Champions League this season, as they recorded two negative records for the English league.
Per Squawka, they became the first English club to finish at the bottom of their UCL groups twice, the first time being in the 2005/06 season under Sir Alex Ferguson - a group with Villarreal, Benfica, and Lille.
ESPN added that the 15 goals conceded by Andre Onana are the most any English club has conceded in the group stage of the competition in six games.
Despite the disappointing outing, ten Hag saw positives in their campaign and believes their UCL elimination will allow them to focus on the Premier League title, where they are sixth on the table.
"There are still many things to play for and now we can of course focus on the Premier League. This is the level we want to play, the Champions League, so we have to give everything to be in the top four so next year, we are back in the Champions League," he said.

Man Utd’s UCL penalty record
Sports Brief also previously reported on United setting an unwanted UCL record after their 4-3 loss to Copenhagen, conceding one of their goals from the penalty spot.
They have conceded one penalty each in their four group games so far this season, and two have been scored; Andre Onana saved one, while Mauro Icardi missed one.
