FootballAndlie Dlamini Decision Perplexes Fans Despite Percy Tau and Desiree Ellis’ Wins at CAF Awards
- Andlie Dlamini was snubbed for Goalkeeper of the Year despite being named in the Best XI
- Percy Tau won Interclub Player of the Year after winning the CAF Champions League in Egypt
- Desiree Ellis recorded a fourth Women's Coach of the Year for her work with Banyana Banyana
South African football stood proud at the CAF Awards in Marrakech.
Bafana Bafana fan favourite, Percy Tau won Interclub Player of the Year and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies won Team of the Year, with Desiree Ellis maintaining her stranglehold on the Women's Coach of the Year award.
In a series of individual bonuses, six South Africans were named in the women's Best XI.
Unfortunately, no Bafana Bafana players were able to replicate the feat although Percy Tau became the first South African to win his award, albeit while playing for Al Ahly.
Users on X (formerly Twitter) backed 29-year-old to now have another crack at the big time:
MrRed @Steyn61995935 posted:
"I don't understand why is he not playing in The EPL, LaLiga or Bundesliga."
From South Africa with Love @Musiwa_MCY commented:
"He must go back to Europe now."
An underlying talking point for the evening among the Msanzi faithful was the Andile Dlamini and Desiree Ellis saga.
CAF Women's Champions League Goalkeeper of the Tournament, Dlamini was named in the CAF Women's Best XI but was beaten to the Goalkeeper of the Year Award by Nigeria's Nnadozie Chiamaka.
Some have questioned how the goalkeeper in the Best XI would not be the automatic Goalkeeper of the Year, or vice versa, while others still blame Ellis for not playing Dlamini in the FIFA Women's World Cup.
TheSuccess @the_successo claimed:
"Desiree is the reason why Andile Dlamini did not win yesterday. Desiree intentionally sidelined Andile."
All the facts and details about Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Nigerian female footballer
FootballIsuameyen @_Mr_Olu believes:
"South Africa not playing Andile Dlamini at the World Cup is just bs tbh..."
