FootballJurgen Klopp Aims Massive Dig at Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia for Snubbing Liverpool
- Jurgen Klopp has fired shots at Chelsea over Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia's signings
- The two midfielders rejected Liverpool in the summer and opted to join Chelsea instead
- Caicedo is yet to make a solid impression in a struggling Mauricio Pochettino side
Jurgen Klopp has taken a massive swipe at Chelsea duo Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia for rejecting Liverpool in the summer.
Liverpool were desperately interested in signing a defensive midfielder after losing Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League.
The club had already splashed out cash to sign Alexis Mac Allister(£35m) from Brighton and Hove Albion and Dominik Szoboszlai(£60m) from RB Leipzig.
How Liverpool missed out on Caicedo, Lavia
The Reds were willing to fork out an even higher amount to land a defensive midfielder. They agreed with Brighton to sign Caicedo for a British record fee, only for the Ecuadorian to turn them down.
Caicedo is said to have spoken to Klopp personally and informed him of his desire to join Chelsea instead. The Blues later agreed on a new British record fee of £115m as the 22-year-old moved to West London.
Liverpool then turned their focus on signing Lavia from Southampton. The Belgian, however, chatted with his international compatriot and one of Chelsea's greatest-ever players, Eden Hazard, and also turned down Liverpool's approach.
Klopp: We were lucky
Caicedo has struggled to blend into an inconsistent Chelsea that are struggling to churn out positive results under Mauricio Pochettino, while Lavia is yet to make his debut after scoring over from the St.Marys with an ankle issue - occurrences that have made Klopp feel 'lucky.'
"The summer we had, we had a few strange things happen in the transfer market, but here, between us, I can say, 'My god, were we lucky, eh?'. We realised that other central defensive midfielders don't want to join Liverpool; you see what happens," as quoted by This is Anfield.
Postecoglou's bravery makes football better, says Guardiola
FootballLiverpool finally signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart and have since become title challengers. They currently lead the Premier League table with 37 points, a point ahead of Arsenal.
Chelsea, meanwhile are 12th after picking up their seventh loss of the season in the 2-0 humbling at Everton.
