  • Chelsea lost away at Everton to compound more misery on Mauricio Pochettino
  • The Blues slipped to 12th on the table with 19 points after 16 games into the season
  • Captain Reece James limped off with another injury in the first half of the defeat

Chelsea suffered another embarrassing defeat to Everton away at Goodison Park, and it heaps more pressure on Mauricio Pochettino as the club slips down the table.

The Blues have picked up just 19 points in 16 Premier League games this season, worse than the amount they had amassed at this stage last season under Graham Potter.

Pochettino is the head of the team and rightfully labelled the biggest problem by the fans, but five of his players have let the team down massively.

Five players letting Chelsea down

1. Reece James

The English defender signed a new contract last year till 2029 and was placed on a reported £250,000 per week wage. Per Transfermarkt, he has missed 34 games due to injury since that time. He was named captain ahead of this season but has featured in eight league games, starting only three.

On his day, he is one of the best right-backs in the world, but he’s hardly ever available, and when he is, he chooses when to turn up, not delivering performances justifying his talent and status in the team.

2. Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea went out of their way to sign the World Cup winner from Benfica in January for £106.8 million. In his early days, he turned up even when the team was in shambles, but lately, he plays like he lacks self-belief despite his enormous potential as a midfielder.

3. Moises Caicedo

Per The Athletic, the Blues broke the British transfer record and paid £115mil to sign the Ecuadorian midfielder from Brighton. He was brought in to ‘unlock’ Fernandez but has yet to do that. He suffers from the same problem as his midfield partner - a lack of self-belief. He was a player who covered ground at Brighton but tries to play safe in his current team.

4. Raheem Sterling

Bar Thiago Silva, the England international, is the most experienced player in the team. Despite this, his inconsistency and shying away from responsibility are massive letdowns for the team. “When Sterling turns up, we are good. Otherwise, it would be a bad day.” shouldn’t be something fans say about a player with over 10 years of Premier League experience.

5. Nicolas Jackson

It’s him, but it could have been any other name occupying the number 9 for Chelsea, Armando Broja? Yes. Fair to the Senegalese international, he should not have been the club’s first-choice striker if they had done their business right. Per PL Stats, he has missed 10 big chances of the 32 the team has missed.

The Todd Boehly-led consortium can not be excused from the problems at the club. The radical change and policy of youth development brought into the club takes time to materialise, if it ever will. After a year and over £1 billion spent, it looks messier than it was.

Five managers who could replace Pochettino

Sports Brief analysed five managers who could replace Pochettino if the former Tottenham Hotspur manager is shown the exit door at Stamford Bridge.

The hierarchy reportedly backs him, but how worse could results get before they change their heart? Unemployed German manager Hansi Flick is one of those who could replace the Argentine.
