Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has berated his teammates following their embarrassing home defeat to Girona, which saw their chances of retaining the La Liga title suffer a massive setback.

The Catalans were pummelled 4-2 at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys by Girona, a result that sees Barcelona slip further down the table, seven points adrift of the league leaders.

According to Football Espana, the defeat against Girona was Barcelona’s second at home this season, and one De Jong was not pleased about as he slammed his teammates for not raising their level.

The Dutchman also claimed responsibility for the defeat, acknowledging the defeat was a tough one to take as he stated that he did not have the best game.

The defeat leaves Barcelona with 34 points from 15 games played so far, while Girona leapfrogs Real Madrid to the summit of the La Liga table with 41 points from 16 games.

Girona claim historic win over Barcelona

Meanwhile, Girona made history after claiming their first-ever away victory over Barcelona, stunning the Catalans 4-2 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Sunday, December 10, MARCA reports

Laporta supports Girona’s title bid

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Joan Laporta would be happy with one Catalan club winning La Liga this season.

The Barcelona president made the statement ahead of the La Liga clash between two Catalan sides, Barca and Girona.

Coming into the game, Girona held a four-point lead over the Blaugrana, surprising many with their start to the season. Barca, on the other hand, has been hot and cold this season.
