  • Itumeleng Khune will play no part in Kazier Chiefs' immediate first-team future
  • The club conducted an internal investigation and has suspended the goalkeeper
  • Khune was accused of an alcohol-related club transgression a few weeks earlier

An unfortunate mark has been left on a stellar career. In late November, Itumeleng Khune was said to have arrived for training under the influence of alcohol.

The celebrity goalkeeper has since been banished from Naturena and the outcome of a disciplinary process will extend his time away from the team.

Kaizer Chiefs released a statement clarifying their position and the steps that were taken in coming to the decision.

The outcome is that Khune must now undergo personal development and growth programmes and when the club is satisfied that he is sufficiently rehabilitated, he may return to the setup.

The investigation is said to have been necessary to ensure team unity and the club believes the squad is sufficiently focused on closing the year out on a high.

Putting their faith in Khune to turn the situation around, Chiefs' statement read:

"As Kaizer Chiefs, we believe in applying corrective measures to achieve personal growth, and we are committed to providing the necessary support to Itumeleng during this period."

Khune is said to be remorseful of actions, even writing a letter of apology to his teammates and coaching staff. As per SoccerLaduma, their source claimed:

"The players feel his pain and have received his apology with open hands. They respect him as a senior player and as a leader."

With Khune unlikely to feature again this year, Cavin Johnson must choose between Brandon Petersen or Bruce Bvuma for their final three fixtures of 2023 against Polokwane City, Richards Bay FC, and Sekhukhune United.

Itumeleng Khune facing Amakhosi exit

Sports Brief recently reported on the fallout regarding Itumeleng Khune's training ground incident.

The goalkeeper's contract expires at the end of the season but the chance of an extension is shaky.
