FootballHarry Maguire: How Chelsea Legend Ricardo Carvalho Helped Man United Star Revive His Career
- Harry Maguire was close to leaving Manchester United in the summer
- He declined a transfer to West Ham after losing his spot and captaincy
- The England international has regained his place in the starting eleven
Harry Maguire fought hard to regain his spot in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup and revive his career, but not many are aware of what he went through to get the results he is getting now.
The defender was relegated to the bench in the Dutch manager's first season in charge and stripped of the captaincy ahead of the coach's sophomore year at Old Trafford.
Maguire was an £80 million signing under former boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and impressed early under the Norwegian boss before things went downhill for him in his final days.
Per The Athletic, United agreed on a fee of £30mil to sell the 30-year-old to West Ham United, but he refused the move and vowed to fight for his place despite being told his chances would be limited.
Fate shone a light on him with injuries to the majority of the Man United back line, particularly Argentina centre-half, Lisandro Martinez, and Maguire took that opportunity with both hands.
How Carvalho helped Maguire
The England international defender showed strong determination in the summer despite rumours vigorously linking him with a move away from the club.
Per Goal, Maguire teamed up with former Chelsea defender, Ricardo Carvalho in Portugal during his post-season holiday and trained thrice daily.
His redemption has helped him win back his place in the team and he is the first choice ahead of even the experienced Raphael Varane.
Maguire's performances earned him the November Premier League Player of the Month award as he continues on the path to redemption.
