Barcelona are grappling with yet another series of setbacks due to player injuries.

Just as Xavi Hernandez's team seemed to be regaining their footing in La Liga following a series of disappointing results, largely attributed to injuries, the Catalan club received a blow with goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffering a lower back injury.

The 31-year-old, who withdrew from Germany's squad in the last international window, is now facing an extended period on the sidelines.

Initially perceived as a mild issue, Barcelona took a conservative approach to ter Stegen's injury.

However, with little improvement noted during his absence, the club has decided to opt for surgery to aid in the recovery of the former Borussia Mönchengladbach player, according to reports from Marca.

Although the date for the procedure is yet to be finalised, the football community has rallied around ter Stegen, with even rival La Liga players expressing their support through heartfelt messages.

La Liga players send ter Stegen messages

Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois and Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak have penned their wishes to the 31-year-old.

Commenting on social media on ter Stegen's announcement of the surgery, Oblak wrote:

"I wish you good and speedy recovery Marc."

Courtois on the other hand, commented:

"Much encouragement! Get better soon."

Ter Stegen is anticipated to be sidelined until at least the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg ties in February 2024.

His absence adds to the growing list of football stars facing extended periods on the sidelines, a concern largely attributed to the demanding fixture schedule.
