Lionel Messi joining Inter Miami was the stuff of dreams for David Beckham, but not in his wildest dreams would he have imagined the success that union would bring so soon.
Messi ran down his two-year contract at Paris Saint-Germain and opted to join the Herons in Major League Soccer over returning to Barcelona or the lucrative Saudi Arabian offer.
Per Goal, Saudi giants Al-Hilal offered Messi a whopping salary of about €1.5 billion, which he turned down in favour of accepting $54mil to join the MLS franchise.
He came on as a second-half substitute for his debut in the Leagues Cup against Mexican club, Cruz Azul and scored a last-minute match-winning free kick to win it 2-1 for Miami.

In an interview, he expressed his full reaction to TIME after Messi was named 2023 Athlete of the Year for his World Cup exploits and influence on football in America.
"I remember getting in the car on the way back, and I said to Victoria, 'I’m not even sure I can drive home'. You couldn’t have written it better. It was for MLS, and for America. It was for the future of the game," he said.
The former Real Madrid star admitted he never doubted he would get Messi to Miami, but Barcelona were his only problem.
"The one that really worried me was Barcelona. He never got to say goodbye to the fans, or say goodbye to the club," he added.
