Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a move to sign Manchester United legend, David de Gea.
The Magpies are in the market for a new goalkeeper following an injury to Nick Pope.
According to Sky Sports, Pope is set to for surgery after he dislocated his shoulder during his side's Premier League meeting with United on Saturday evening.
It is believed that the injury could keep him sidelined for four to five months, in a massive blow to Newcastle.
The situation has since prompted the St. James Park-based outfit to hunt for a short-term replacement ahead of the second half of the season.
De Gea linked with Newcastle move
It is understood that De Gea is among the goalkeepers being considered, with reports claiming Newcastle are exploring the possibility of signing him.
According to talkSPORT, the Spaniard is currently without a club, months after he departed Old Trafford after a decade at the Old Trafford outfit.
The 33-year-old was initially linked with a move to Inter Milan, while a switch to the Saudi Pro League was also mooted.
However, the experienced shot-stopper remains a free agent, making him a formidable candidate for the role at Newcastle.
He is bound to face competition from Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale, who is also thought to be open to a transfer to the north-east.
Ramsdale has fallen down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard preferring David Raya as his No. 1.
