FootballSteve Komphela Trusting the Data to Show Him Moroka Swallows Are on the Right Track
- Steve Komphela took over at Moroka Swallows at the start of this DStv Premiership season
- Swallows are currently hovering just behind the leading pack but have two games in hand
- The Dube Birds have a good defensive record after conceding the fewest goals in the league
The upward lines of the graph are to Steve Komphela's liking. Over five months into his Moroka Swallows reign, the seasoned coach is happy with the progress his team has made in building their style of play.
Preparing for a trip to Orlando to face the Buccaneers in the original Soweto Derby, the wise wordsmith elaborated on the need to trust the process.
Embracing the modern game's reliance on data, Komphela says the numbers affirm the work they have done in ensuring incremental improvements.
Aiming to lay solid foundations before making more substantial strides in coming seasons, the 56-year-old wants a brand of football he and the Dube Birds can be proud of.
Speaking to TimesLive, he said:
"Can you play a game that people want to buy a ticket and watch Moroka Swallows? With the utmost humility, I think you can tick that box."
Komphela wants Shallows to be 'ruthless'
Swallows have not lost away from home but Komphela stressed the need to be 'ruthless' back in Dobsonville. Despite the loss to Kaizer Chiefs and how the goal was conceded, Goal quoted the coach's refusal to change direction:
"If as a coach, you panic, your players are going to panic. You have to stay true to your identity and to the process. You must be courageous."
Komphela relayed that the team has a goal of averaging of two league points per game. As well as the fixture against Pirates, Swallows have four more matches to close the year out on 16 games.

FootballCurrently on 18 points, at least three wins and a draw from their final 2023 fixtures would have them within touching distance of that average.
