Manchester Evening News reports that Anthony Gordon was responsible for Newcastle's winner, with the forward finding the back of the net in the 55th minute of the match.

United's defeat came only days after they had suffered another setback, but this time in the UEFA Champions League.

Their weekend clash against Newcastle was not short of drama either, with ten Hag and Martial involved in an ugly clash during the Premier League tie.

Ten Hag clashes with Martial

According to Sportbible, ten Hag could be seen exchanging words with Martial in the first half when the French star made a lackadaisical attempt to track down Fabian Schar's run.

Martial's poor performance in the opening exchanges saw the United staff instruct Ramsus Hojlund to warm up, only for the former Monaco ace to continue playing in the second half.

Speaking on his incident with the French player, ten Hag downplayed the aggressive clash, suggesting that he was only looking to re-energise the team.

"It's not about Anthony Martial, it's about the team. I try to energise the team and try to get a reaction from the team at this moment. As you see, we had a tough period and when you're coaching you are a little more aggressive, so that's normal," he added.
