They temporarily signed the likes of Memphis Depay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but parted company. In 2020, they signed Martin Braithwaite, but he, too, was shown the door last year.

Last summer, they settled on Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski, who helped them win La Liga last season for the first time since 2019.

Serious financial issues hit the club, and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the situation, per 90min. They were forced to make smart signings in the last few years, and Alvaro Morata was one name they wanted to sign.

Xavi signing Morata

Ahead of their game against Atletico Madrid, Xavi disclosed that he wanted to sign the Spanish international. Barcelona fans would not have liked the signing since he played for the bitter rivals Real Madrid.

“It’s true that I wanted to sign him. There was that possibility. I was talking to him and I wanted him in the team, but it couldn’t happen. He’s a forward that I really like,” via Barca Universal.

Xavi reportedly wanted to sign Morata in January 2022, shortly after taking over from Ronald Koeman. The Blaugrana opted for Aubameyang. The Olympique Marseille striker ended up scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances for Barcelona.

Morata was a Juventus player then and has been in and out of teams in Europe. Since returning to Atletico in July 2022, he has become a key layer for Diego Simeone.

“Morata is a great striker. He is a generous footballer, who works a lot for the team, he works a lot. He goes very well into spaces and helps his teams a lot. I really like him a lot. With him and with Griezmann, Atlético has a world-class forward line,” Xavi added.

Last season, he scored 13 La Liga goals and started even better this time around. He has bagged seven goals in the league so far and five in the Champions League, per Transfermarkt.

Morata reaches goal milestone against Madrid

Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata was on top form as they outclassed Real Madrid to win 3-1 at home in September.

The former Juventus striker scored a double to seal the three points for the hosts and reach a new milestone in the process.

The brace from Morata means he has now scored five goals against Real Madrid in nine appearances, Sports Brief reported.
