- Local transport had also been cancelled due to the inclement weather
Heavy snowfall led to the cancellation of Bayern Munich's home game against Union Berlin on Saturday.
Munich and southern Germany are experiencing transport chaos due to cold weather, snowfall, and ice.
“It was decided not to play the game because of the security risks for all involved,” Union said in a statement via Skysports.
The German soccer federation reported that the decision not to host the game was made by stadium management "due to persistent heavy snowfall."
This call followed a winter storm that blanketed southern Germany and portions of Austria and Switzerland, disrupting travel throughout the region.
Munich airport suspended flight operations until 6 a.m. on Sunday, and several railway lines in the Munich area had to be shut down.
According to the Reuters, some passengers in Munich and the nearby city of Ulm spent Friday night on trains due to service suspensions.
Despite Bundesliga leader Bayer Leverkusen not playing until Sunday, Bayern had aimed to temporarily secure the top spot in the standings on Saturday with a victory over Union.
However, Union is currently enduring a 15-game winless streak across all competitions.
