  • Cavin Johnson took charge of Kaizer Chiefs in October after the sacking of Molefi Ntseki
  • Amakhosi have been linked with a host of coaching names, most notably Pitso Mosimane
  • The DStv Premiership is set to take a six-week break for AFCON at the beginning of 2024

Cavin Johnson's interim reign as coach looks set to continue into 2024 as Kaizer Chiefs remain pragmatic in making the right appointment.

The arrangement could even be made permanent, as the mood around Naturena has improved to a seemingly harmonious state.

The Amakhosi have two wins and two defeats under Johnson, but it is the style of play that has turned management into believers, Soccer Laduma reported.

This honeymoon atmosphere could be deceptive, however, with the lack of immediate expectation allowing Johnson and the squad an element of freedom.

The results are not a clear indicator either, as the two wins came against bottom-placed club, Cape Town Spurs and a Moroka Swallows paralysed by an ineffective midfield and a commitment to playing out from the back.

Admittedly, the defeats were thanks to a Brandon Petersen mistake and a more coherent Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.

An expansion of Johnson's influence is also on the cards, as reported by SNL24.

With only the Nedbank Cup to look forward to and Mamelodi Sundowns running away with the league, the season is almost a write-off, so the club has a chance to take stock.

Johnson is unlikely to come under fire as their final games of the calendar year are easily winnable fixtures against Polokwane City, Richards Bay FC, and Sekhuhune United.

2024 would bring a dose of reality, as making the move permanent would lock Johnson into short and long-term goals, as well as give the notoriously difficult Chiefs fans an object to direct their frustrations at.

Best permanent options for Kaizer Chiefs

When Johnson was first appointed, Sports Brief compiled a list of the most suitable long-term options for Kaizer Chiefs.

Veteran coach, Pitso Mosimane has always been the preferred candidate but developments since have made it less likely.

The former Al Wahda boss comes with a full technical team which is likely to make the appointment unaffordable for Chiefs.
