  • Rhulani Mokwena has given Mamelodi Sundowns injury updates ahead of their clash with FC Nouadhibou
  • The South African side will face off with the Mauritanian outfit in a CAF Champions League cracker
  • While some players have recuperated and are available for the game, two key players were injured during the international break

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has lamented that he is frustrated after Aubrey Modiba and Mothobi Mvala picked up injuries during the international break.

The pair were part of Hugo Broos’ squad that prosecuted the November matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Sundowns are billed to return to action for the first time since they claimed the African League title as they face FC Nouadhibou in the first match of their CAF Champions League group stages.

Mokwena disclosed that the likes of Peter Shalulile, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, and Sipho Mbule are back in action, but Mvala and Modiba picked up injuries on national team duty.

The tactician was particularly upset about Modiba’s status after the defender played the full 90 minutes in both matches for Bafana Bafana.

Mokwena said, via iDiski Times:

“I’m a bit disappointed because Modiba comes back with an injury. And the information I get is that there was already the pain and he still had to play 90 minutes on an artificial turf like that in Rwanda, with the rain and all of that with an injury.
“Now we might have Modiba out for a little bit more time. Mothobi now comes back also from Bafana with an injury, so that also for me is always a worry because I haven’t had Mothobi Mvala on the pitch today – it was the first session for the Bafana players.”

Rhulani cautions Sundowns players

Sports Brief earlier reported that Rhulani Mokwena cited Chelsea’s situation as an example, as the manager cautioned his Mamelodi Sundowns players about their continued success.

Following their African Football League triumph, Masandwana have maintained their position as one of the best football clubs on the continent.

It was Sundowns' first trophy this season and second under the leadership of Mokwena, as they continue to dominate domestic football in South Africa.
