Football'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius Granted Parole 10 Years After Killing Reeva Steenkamp
- Famed Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole by a court in Johannesburg
- He has been denied bail on several occasions before but this time there was no objection
- Blade Runner will be released from custody on January 5 subject to conditions for parole
Paralympic gold medalist, Oscar Pistorius will soon taste partial freedom.
The 'Blade Runner', as he was known before his fall from grace, has been granted parole just over six years after being found guilty of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The 37-year-old will be released on January 5, 2024 and will be restricted to his suburb in Pretoria unless otherwise agreed upon by South Africa's Correctional Services.
The mother of the victim, June Steenkamp did not oppose Pistorius' parole but stated in the hearing that she did not feel the former athlete felt remorse for his actions, as reported by EWN.
Before being released in just over six weeks, Pistorius must undergo a pre-release programme that will help him adjust to the world outside as well as the people he may interact with.
He will remain under the surveillance of an official from Correctional Services and must abide by a host of conditions, including not being allowed to drink alcohol, until his sentence is completed in 2029.
Pistorius shot his girlfriend on Valentine's Day in 2013 after what the prosecution argued was a domestic argument.
The multiple gold medalist maintains that he believed he was aiming at an intruder who was hiding behind the bathroom door of his bedroom.
Pistorius was found not guilty of murder, but was convicted of culpable homicide. As noted by SkyNews, he was initially sentenced to six years in prison but the sentence was doubled after an appeal.
