France's Under-17 team could be disqualified from the ongoing FIFA U17 World Cup in Indonesia after reportedly fielding an illegal player.

Forward Yanis Issoufou, who featured for Niger's U17 team just three months ago, is now playing for Les Bleuets at the global tournament.

The Montpellier youngster played a role as France reached the quarter-finals of the tournament but was unused in the elimination of Senegal.

However, he featured in the 3-0 thrashing of the United States of America in the group stage.

According to the FIFA rules (article 24), a player is prohibited from playing for two nations at the same level, which disqualifies Issoufou from participating in the World Cup.

France reportedly did not inform FIFA of the player's nationality switch despite including him in their squad.

In a letter from the Senegalese FA, the young Teranga Lions are calling for the disqualification of the European nation.

“We request, therefore, Mr. Director, that considering what has happened, France be disqualified from the 2023 Indonesia U17 World Cup for fielding an illegible player,” part of the letter read.

France beat Senegal 5-4 on penalties to set up a clash against Uzbekistan in the last eight of the competition.

Africa's only representatives at the tournament in the quarter-finals, Morocco and Mali, face off on Saturday, November 25, at the Stadion Manahan.
