  • Arsenal are expected to make signings during January to strengthen their current squad
  • Ivan Toney is among a number of players the Gunners have already been linked with
  • Arsenal, who currently sit third in the standings, are backed to challenge for the EPL title

Arsenal are expected to enter the January transfer window in search of new players to help them challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners came close to lifting the crown last season but fell short towards the end of the campaign, allowing Manchester City to retain the title.

The North Londoners made three signings this January, with Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, and Jorginho moving to the Emirates Stadium at the time.

While the trio did not do much to help Arsenal beat City to the top-flight trophy, their contribution during the second half of the campaign cannot be overlooked.

Mikel Arteta's charges are very much in the title race once again this season, with the side currently placed third in the standings with 27 points, just one off top-placed City.

Arsenal have been backed to make signings ahead of the upcoming January transfer window to strengthen their squad in a bid to challenge for the EPL title.

The Mirror reports that while the North London side have appeared solid so far this term, there are still areas where they may feel they need to strengthen.

Sports Brief takes a look at five players Arteta's side could move for in January.

Players Arsenal could move for in January

5. Dusan Vlahovic

The striking department is one that has been earmarked for strengthening at the Emirates Stadium outfit.

Dusan Vlahovic is one such player who could be targeted, with the Juventus star already linked with a possible exit.

The Gunners are said to have shown interest to sign the Serbian in 2022, but Juve blocked his possible exit.

4. Santiago Gimenez

Still in the striker market, Santiago Gimenez's name is one that has been floated a few times time.

The Mexican is currently enjoying the best form of his life at Feyenoord, who he helped win the Eredivisie last season.

Gimenez has already scored 13 goals in just 12 games so far, making him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

3. Martin Zubimendi

The Spanish midfielder has been a mainstay figure in the Real Sociedad team.

It is understood that he has a €60 million (£52mil) release clause.

However, reports claim convincing him to leave Anoeta is another matter.

2. Douglas Luiz

The Aston Villa star has been one of the shining lights in Unai Emery's otherwise flawless team this season.

Arsenal had shown interest in signing Luiz way before the midfielder sealed a move to Villa Park in 2022.

Given his contribution since his arrival, Aston Villa may find it a little difficult to let him go.

1. Ivan Toney

The English striker is currently serving a betting ban and will be back in action in the second half of the ongoing season.

Ivan Toney has been the subject of transfer speculation, with Chelsea among the top clubs eyeing his services, per Metro UK.

Be that as it may, Arsenal are also understood to be keen on his services, and could battle the Blues for his signature.

Five controversial decisions against Arsenal

Sports Brief has also analysed five controversial decisions against Arsenal after Arteta went on a rant following the decision against his team in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.

The Gunners were also on the wrong side of poor officiating after Manchester City star, Mateo Kovacic escaped a red card for two offences, though a win was their compensation.
