Nigerian footballers Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala have been nominated for the 2023 Globe Soccer Awards.
Last year, Osimhen was named the Emerging Player of the Year by the organisers. The 24-year-old played a pivotal role as Napoli claimed the Serie A title last season when he scored 26 league goals.
It was the first time Napoli would win the title again after more than three decades and the Nigerian striker played an important role for the side he joined in the summer of 2020.
The striker also claimed the Golden Boot and surpassed George Weah's record as the African player with the most goals in the Italian Serie A.
Osimhen will contend with Nicolo Barella, Jude Bellingham, Karim Benzema, Yassine Bounou, Antoine Griezmann, Ilkay Gundogan, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Robert Lewandowski for the prestigious award.
Other superstars nominated for the prize are Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Kylian Mbappe, Kim Min-Jae, Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane and Vinicius Jr.
Also, Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala is among the nominees for the Women’s Best Player award for the first time.
Oshoala helped Barcelona Femeni to the UEFA Women’s Champions League title last season.
The winner will be decided via online voting, Daily Post reports.
Winners in the different categories will be announced at a Gala event on January 19, 2024.
Mboma tips Osimhen for CAF Award
Sports Brief earlier reported that Cameroon legend, Patrick Mboma tipped Nigerian international, Victor Osimhen for the 2023 CAF Player of the Year Award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently released the list of 30 nominees for the men’s categories for this year's awards, scheduled for December 11 in Marrakech, Morocco.
Among the favourites for the prestigious prize are Napoli striker Osimhen, Al-Nassr forward Sadio Mane, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah, and Yassine Bounou of Al-Hilal.
