- Gavi is set for months on the sidelines after sustaining an ACL injury on duty for Spain
- The 19-year-old midfielder is expected to miss the rest of the season and Euro 2024
- FIFA are expected to pay compensation to Barcelona due to the injury to the Spaniard
Barcelona confirmed that young midfielder, Gavi had sustained an ACL injury during Spain's Euro 2024 qualifying clash with Georgia.
Since he was injured on international duty, the Catalan giants are entitled to compensation from FIFA, which could total €3 million.
The 19-year-old was forced off after just 26 minutes in Spain's final Group A match, which they comfortably won 3-1. He injured himself as he tried to control a long ball.
Barcelona confirmed that Gavi had sustained 'a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament' in his right knee as well as damage to his meniscus.
He is expected to undergo surgery before embarking on a long recovery journey expected to take months. His 2023/24 season is probably over now and his participation in Euro 2024 with Spain is in serious jeopardy.
What FIFA could pay Barcelona
According to Spanish outlet, Mundo Deportivo, FIFA will have to pay clubs who lose players for more than 28 days because of their involvement with their countries.
Since Gavi will be out for at least six months, the football governing body will pay La Blaugrana a sum of at least €3 million in compensation.
FIFA will reportedly start paying Barcelona on December 16. The club will receive €20,548 per day for a maximum of 365 days. The maximum compensation FIFA can pay to clubs is €7.5mil per player.
Gavi has made 15 appearances for Barcelona this season and started 13 times.
Since his breakout in 2021, he has become one of the most exciting talents in world football and won last year's Kopa Trophy for his brilliant performances.
