  • Andre Onana has faced a lot of criticism since he moved to Manchester United this summer
  • The Cameroonian international is yet to prove that he is a formidable replacement for De Gea
  • African football legend Patrick Mboma has backed the goalkeeper to shine at the Old Trafford

Cameroonian football legend Patrick Mboma has stated that Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is among the best.

Onana has been faced with lots of criticism from United fans over his performances for the club in recent times.

The 27-year-old has been mocked for conceding what many describe as 'cheap' goals, especially after their 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove last September.

Since the Red Devils parted ways with David de Gea and the arrival of Onana from Italian outfit Inter Milan, United have continued to struggle between the sticks.

The Cameroonian had been touted to be the ideal replacement for a team eyeing a potential title quest, but it has been somewhat calamitous according to GOAL.

Onana conceded 18 goals in his first 10 matches for the club in all competitions, leaving fans fuming. However, former African Player of the Year Patrick Mboma stated that his compatriot is one of the best in the world.

Mboma who was in the stands at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium during Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against Lesotho leapt to the defence of Onana.

He told Sports Brief:

"You know football is just ups and downs. Sometimes people cannot recognize your value and sometimes exaggerate your performance.
"It's just a moment for him a bad moment for him let's say. I mean you can't consider it too bad moment but at the end of the day he's mentally strong and he is a very good player.
"He just has to be focused and time will show that he is among the best, but work comes at the end of the day."

What Guardiola said about Onana

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola once voiced his admiration for Cameroon and Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, appreciating how good he is.

The Cameroon international has been in the news for the wrong reasons recently, as he continues to struggle between the sticks for Manchester United.

Onana finished that season as one of the best goalkeepers in the Champions League alongside the likes of Ederson and Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois.
