  • Arsenal lost 1-0 to Newcastle United with a goal subjected to three VAR checks
  • Mikel Arteta felt aggrieved and labelled officiating ‘shameful’ and ‘disgraceful’
  • A ex-Arsenal vice-chairman has hit out at Arteta for his comments and behaviour

Mikel Arteta has been scolded by a former club chief for his conduct and comments after the controversial 1-0 loss to Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon's goal against Arsenal was subjected to three VAR checks to decide if the ball had gone out of play, if Joelinton fouled Gabriel Magalhaes, and if the goal-scorer was offside.

The goal was allowed to stand after over four minutes and the Gunners felt cheated, particularly claiming a foul after Joelinton pushed his compatriot to head the ball into the path of Gordon.

Arteta labelled the officiating as 'disgraceful' and 'shameful' and was charged for breaching rule E3.1, as contained in a statement released by the FA Spokesperson.

He has until tomorrow - Tuesday, November 21 - to respond to the charges against him.

Dein criticises Arteta's comment

Arsenal's former long-serving vice-chairman, David Dein has weighed in on the manager's comments and team performance in an interview on talkSPORT.

He claimed the Gunners did not deserve to win from the statistics of the game after over 100 minutes played.

"In the final analysis, I think it was a bit of misdirection because the fact is, there was 101 minutes - three minutes added on in the first half and eight minutes in the second. In 101 minutes of football, we only had one shot at goal, so you can't really say that the team deserved to win. It is what it is," he said.

On Arteta's comments, Dein said:

"There is a process in place for how they deal with these things, and I just think it was a little bit unnecessary. I don't think it did the image of the club any good."

Five controversial decisions against Arsenal

Sports Brief has also analysed five controversial decisions against Arsenal after Arteta went on a rant following the VAR's decision against his team in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle.

The Gunners were also on the wrong side of officiating after Manchester City star, Mateo Kovacic escaped a red card for two offences, though a win compensated the Londoners.
