- Ollie Watkins had an interesting pick for the top 5 greatest Premier League strikers of all time
- The Aston Villa star has scored six goals in 12 Premier League matches this season
- Interestingly, his list did not include Wayne Rooney or Harry Kane
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins had an interesting list of the top five greatest ever Premier League strikers.
Watkins knows a thing or two about scoring goals in the Premier League, as he has bagged an impressive six goals in 12 games for Unai Emery’s side. He has also registered five assists.
This sort of form has helped Watkins and Aston Villa to become unlikely title contenders, as they sit just three points behind leaders Manchester City.
Gareth Southgate also seems to appreciate Watkins’ good form, as the striker has earned two consecutive call-ups in the last two international breaks.
As one of the most formidable strikers in the Premier League, Watkins recently revealed the inspiration behind his goal-scoring prowess.
Watkins’ top 5 strikers
In a recent interview with BT Sport, Watkins, who has 11 goals across all competitions this season, made some surprise inclusions in strikers he has admired in the history of the Premier League.
In fifth place, the 27-year old went with Jermain Defoe, a former Tottenham, West Ham and Sunderland striker who managed to score 302 career goals.
Robin Van Persie surprisingly came in fourth place in Watkins’ list.
The Dutchman cemented his legacy in the Premier League playing for Arsenal and Manchester United, and while his numbers were not astronomical, he was one of the finest finishers during his time.
Another former Manchester United striker, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, made the list as Watkins named him in third place.
During his five-year spell with the Red Devils, ‘Ruud boy’ managed to score 95 Premier League goals, which is an incredible feat as he achieved that number in only 150 games, according to Transfermarkt.

FootballThere can be no argument about Watkins’ top two best strikers in the Premier League as he went for Alan Shearer in second place, and ranked Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as the best striker in the English top flight.
Shearer, who played most of his career at Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers, is still the king of the Premier League top scorer charts with 260 goals, while Thierry Henry is the second most prolific foreign player in terms of goals in the Premier League, with only Aguero outscoring him in that criteria.
