  • Sports Brief take a look at some of the best signings of the 2023/2024 Premier League season

The 2023/2024 Premier League season is only 12 game weeks in, with players currently away for the last international break of the year.

Defending champions, Manchester City have taken an early lead in their pursuit to become the first-ever Premier League team to win four league titles on the bounce.

Tottenham Hotspur's rein under Ange Postecoglou began positively, while Liverpool are seemingly back in the fold as title contenders. Chelsea and Manchester United are still languishing outside of the top four as all the newcomers Luton Town, Sheffield United and Burnley occupy the relegation places.

Amidst all the back and forth, some new signings have blended into their new clubs beautifully, conjuring up integral moments for their new employers. Sports Brief takes a look at some of the best signings done by Premier League clubs for the 2023/2024 season.

1. James Maddison - Tottenham Hotspur

It pains that his fitness issues struck again a few months after he had developed a new combination with Heung-min Son. After Harry Kane's untimely departure, Spurs needed a new go-to man.

Maddison might not offer the numerous goals Kane had, but his ingenuity has seen him rack up eight goal involvements in his debut season in North London.

2. Jeremy Doku - Manchester City

Anyone who has followed the tricky Belgian since his days at Anderlecht knows that there is a lot of talent in the 21-year-old.

Pep Guardiola was in dire need of a new creative outlet after losing Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez to other clubs and Kevin De Bruyne to injury. Doku has five assists in the league so far.

3. Cole Palmer - Chelsea

He probably would have been a starter for Manchester City this season after Mahrez's departure, but he took a gamble to leave for West London. And boy hasn't that decision paid off!

Palmer has walked straight into Mauricio Pochettino's starting XI, breathing a fresh lease of life. He has six goal involvements in the Premier League, with his efforts being rewarded with a first senior call-up to the England national team.

4. James Ward-Prowse - West Ham

Once it was confirmed that Southampton were going down last season, it was only a matter of time before Ward-Prowse found new suitors.

The suitors came in the form of a loaded West Ham who had just sold Declan Rice to Arsenal. The dead-ball specialist slotted directly into David Moyes' team and has already registered five assists.

5. Guglielmo Vicario - Tottenham Hotspur

Where is Hugo Lloris? This is a question Spurs fans would have asked had Guglielmo Vicario been below-par for them.

But luckily and rather sweetly for Postecoglou, who wanted to move on the veteran French goalkeeper, Vicario came in from the Serie A and settled in well.

Of course, an argument can be made on how the defensive partnership of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven might have helped him, but you can't argue against his 39 saves all season, especially against Chelsea when they were two men down. Or his four clean sheets, more than any other goalkeeper, bar two.

Top 10 defenders in the Premier League

The 2023/24 EPL campaign is only 12 games in, but defending seems to have taken a back seat, with only Arsenal and Liverpool averaging less than one goal conceded per game.

But amid that somewhat sorry statistic, there have been standout defenders of the season so far. Sports Brief takes a look at the top 10 defenders in the Premier League so far.
