- Enyeama remains one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers of all time
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro looked stranded when asked to possibly invite Vincent Enyeama to mentor Francis Uzoho and other goalkeepers.
Enyeama remains one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers of all time, renowned for denying some of the greatest footballers in the world, including Lionel Messi.
While at French club Lille between 2011 and 2018, Enyeama smashed a number of records, setting his own.
The Nigerian legend kept 11 consecutive clean sheets in the Ligue 1 during the first half of 2013/2014 season – with a total of 1,176 minutes without conceding a goal.
He was part of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations under Stephen Keshi.
Enyeama won two CAF Champions League titles with Enyimba and also won several titles in Israel.
He served as the Super Eagles captain from 2013 until his retirement from international football in 2015. He is one of the country's most-capped players having made 101 appearances.
Since his retirement, the successive Super Eagles coaches have struggled to get a safe pair of hands.
Following recent errors from goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, there are calls that Enyeama should be invited to mentor the goalkeepers, while some fans have called on the legend to come out of retirement.
However, during the pre-match presser for Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, a journalist suggested to Peseiro the possible invitation of Enyeama.
The Portuguese tactician looked blank, and after a few seconds, he responded: "I don't know him."
Peseiro continued:
"I have confidence in our goalkeepers. Uzoho was our goalkeeper in the qualification. He only didn't play a match. It was Adeleye they played against Sierra Leone. Now, there is Ojo and Amas. I believe in our goalkeepers. I believe in Uzoho also."
