Legendary Cameroonian footballer, Alexander Song has officially announced his retirement from the game.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder has hung up his boots at the age of 36 following a career that spanned almost two decades.

Song enjoyed most of his success during his time with La Blaugrana, where he helped win La Liga and take second place in various competitions.

In his 19-year senior football career, Song also played for French outfit, Bastia and had spells with Charlton Athletic and West Ham United in England.

Before retiring, the former Cameroon international spent the last three years of his career in Djibouti, playing for Arta/Solar7, as reported by Sportsmole.

He made 419 club appearances and had 49 caps for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. His country was a runner-up at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and Song also made the best XI of the tournament in Ghana.

He scored 12 goals and provided 32 assists in his club career, per Transfermarkt.

In 2012, the hard-tackling midfielder finished third on the Africa Player of the Year podium, behind Didier Drogba and eventually winner, Yaya Toure.

Song on joining Barcelona for money

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on former Arsenal and Cameroon midfielder, Song stating he joined Barcelona for money.

He decided to leave Arsenal at the peak of his career to sign for the Catalans despite no assurance of regular game time.

According to Song, the opportunity to become a millionaire was all he was thinking of and he did not care about game time.

Song gifts wife mansion on birthday

Sports Brief also previously reported on Song gifting his wife a mansion in Yaoundé as a show of appreciation on her birthday.

The AS Arta/ Solar7 player made a lovely gesture to his partner, Olivia Song for being beside him through their 'thick and thin'.

In a message posted on Instagram, Song expressed love for the mother of his children and praised her for showing faith in him.
