FootballCole Palmer: Chelsea Star Discloses He Supported Manchester City’s Rival United, Idolises Rooney
- Cole Palmer has hit the ground running since joining Chelsea on deadline day
- He left his boyhood club, Manchester City, for £40 million and moved to London
- His latest revelation has suggested a bit of why he left Pep Guardiola's side
Cole Palmer left Manchester City for Chelsea on the summer transfer deadline day in search of regular first-team football, but there may be another reason that prompted the move.
Palmer spent 15 years at City's academy, having joined as a six-year-old boy and had spent two seasons as part of the first team, racking up 41 appearances, including 25 in the treble-winning season.
At 21, he wanted more first-team minutes, which the Citizens couldn't guarantee and were unwilling to sanction a loan move, leading to his permanent departure.
Per 90min, after about two months at Chelsea, he has played more Premier League minutes for the Blues than he did at his former club, showcasing his lack of opportunities.
Palmer is a Man Utd fan
According to Football London, who quoted former City defender Nedum Onuoha, the soon-to-be England international supported rivals Manchester United growing up.
As quoted by Express, he named Wayne Rooney as his footballing hero growing up because he watched many of his games.
“What a player. When I was growing up, I used to watch all the football, and the one that sticks in my mind is Rooney. Ever since I was a little kid, he has been my footballing hero.”
As noted by Chelsea's official statement, he earned his first England senior team call-up after dazzling against his former club following the withdrawal of James Maddison due to injury.
As seen in a video shared on social media by the national team, he claimed he thought the text was a blag at first and did not want to believe it.
